Hobies and Americas Cup

When Larry Ellison gave an acceptance speech after Oracle Team USA won the 2013 Americas Cup, he commented,

“This will all be worth it if a few kids get interested and take up Hobie Cat sailing.”

Well…fast forward a few years… and not only is there a Hobie® Wave competition for kids, called the Americas Cup Endeavour program, https://www.americascup.com/en/endeavour.html but both the official Americas Cup defender and challenger are skippered by former Hobie sailors and Aussies to boot…. Jimmy Spithill and Glenn Ashby (pictured sailing the Wildcat)

We can’t help thinking that the Kiwis, who happen to have won every race of the Cup final series so far, took a leaf out of Hobie’s MirageDrive® book after discovering that leg power beats arm power. With their pedal powered hydraulic system rather than the traditional grinder pedestal powered system, they seem to have better control of their foil and wing systems.
